The official presentation of the first National Report on the Nursing Profession in Italy, produced by the MeS Laboratory of the Institute of Management and Health Science Interdisciplinary Center of the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies in Pisa in collaboration with FNOPI (National Federation of Nursing Professions), took place on Monday 12 May. This important event, attended by many national authorities and institutions, marks the start of a structured reflection on the role of nurses within the National Health Service, based on empirical evidence and consolidated data.

The Sant'Anna School was represented by Milena Vainieri, full professor of Economics and Business Management and head of the MeS Laboratory, Sabina Nuti, full professor of Economics and Business Management, and Lorenzo Taddeucci, PhD student at the MeS Laboratory.

The evolution of health needs, the growing complexity of care pathways, and the reorganization of local services make it necessary to thoroughly review the contribution of all healthcare professions, starting with nursing. In this context, the report aims to provide a rigorous knowledge base to guide future policies, decisions, and discussions, overcoming approaches based on subjective perceptions or partial knowledge.

The document, the result of over a year's work, provides an up-to-date and detailed picture of the nursing profession, highlighting its characteristics, challenges, and potential. It is a fundamental starting point for promoting a broad and informed discussion that can fully appreciate the contribution of nurses to the stability and evolution of the public healthcare system.

The report is based on a solid and transparent methodological approach, which integrates secondary data from official sources with primary data collected through qualitative tools. The work was carried out in a participatory manner, with the constant support of the FNOPI technical group, while respecting the scientific autonomy of the Sant'Anna research group.

The report is not intended to be prescriptive, but rather serves as a useful information platform for a wide range of readers, including public decision-makers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and anyone interested in better understanding the present and future of the nursing profession. We hope that this first step will pave the way for a constructive and ongoing dialogue based on data, analysis, and vision.
